ARCHITECTURE:The architecture of nano mediates between the Boone Gallery space and the immersive environment created by the media installations. Working between the alternative scales and dimensions of Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion world map and molecular nano structures, the exhibition begins in the lobby with a folded three-dimensional surface, which introduces visitors to the gallery. Inside the gallery, the folded surfaces - developed from geometric primitives through the unfolding of the projected carbon molecule ("buckyball") - create interlocking layers of enclosed and semi-enclosed "cells" and "sense spaces". These physical spaces transform the gallery with spatial tactility, acting as a threshold to transpose the visitors' experience from the anthropomorphic scale to the nano scale. Rather than forming a backdrop for art in a traditional exhibition, the architecture of nano actively forms a synergy with the exhibition media and the gallery visitor. |
